Michel Goemans is the RSA Professor of Mathematics, a member of the Theory of Computation group at CSAIL, and currently the Head of the Department of Mathematics. His research interests are in combinatorial optimization and algorithms. He has developed new techniques to design approximation algorithms for hard optimization problems. He is an ACM Fellow.
The goal of the Theory of Computation CoR is to study the fundamental strengths and limits of computation as well as how these interact with mathematics, computer science, and other disciplines.
Theory research at CSAIL covers a broad spectrum of topics, including algorithms, complexity theory, cryptography, distributed systems, parallel computing and quantum computing.
