We conduct research in many areas of networking: wireless networks, Internet architecture and protocols, overlay and peer-to-peer networks, sensor networks, network security, and networked systems.
Our research aims to improve the performance, robustness, and ease of management of future networks and cloud computing systems. We currently focus on network protocols and algorithms for large-scale datacenters, programmable switching architectures, and learning-based networked systems. We also study performance modeling and analysis of computer systems and bridging theory and practice in computer system design.
Reinforcement Learning and Neural Networks are used for boosting bitrate adaptation performance in video streaming, which outperforms state-of-the-arts algorithms by 13.1% - 25.0%.
The prestigious 2020 Infosys Prize in Engineering and Computer Science was awarded to Hari Balakrishnan, the Fujitsu professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, co-leader of the Networks and Mobile Systems Group within CSAIL, and co-director of MIT’s Center for Wireless Networks and Mobile Computing, for his outstanding contributions to science and research.
A webpage today is often the sum of many different components. A user’s home page on a social-networking site, for instance, might display the latest posts from the users’ friends; the associated images, links, and comments; notifications of pending messages and comments on the user’s own posts; a list of events; a list of topics currently driving online discussions; a list of games, some of which are flagged to indicate that it’s the user’s turn; and of course the all-important ads, which the site depends on for revenues.
