New Scientist takes a closer look at the DARPA Robotics Challenge, in particular MIT’s approach to developing software that will allow them to successfully operate the Atlas humanoid robot, built by Boston Dynamics, through a series of obstacles designed to mimic a typical disaster-relief operation.

The New Scientist’s Hal Hodson profiled CarSpeak, “a system that allows autonomous vehicles to gain a 3D view of an area could reduce the chance of a collision with an unseen obstacle or person by 14 times.”
