For twenty years CSAIL has been pioneering research in computing that improves the way people work, play, and learn. With values including Fearlessness + Enthusiasm, Diversity + Collaboration, and Creativity + Intelligence, CSAIL researchers have imagined the impossible, celebrated bold solutions, and embraced researchers and solutions from all backgrounds.

While CSAIL as it is known today started in 2003 through the merging of two powerhouse MIT institutions—the AI Lab and the Laboratory for Computer Science—the work of the lab goes back 60 years to the founding of Project MAC. Project MAC spread the power of computing, aiming to make computational power as common and accessible as electricity. Both of these landmark evolutions were pivotal points for CSAIL to become the technological force it is today.

To commemorate these milestones, on Monday, June 26 we are planning a celebration for the 60th anniversary of Project MAC and the 20th anniversary of the merger of LCS and the AI Lab into CSAIL. There will be a Computing the Future symposium featuring talks by CSAIL alumni, events centered on CSAIL’s rich technical and human-driven history, and highlights of our talented faculty, students, postdocs, and members of the greater CSAIL community. Come and hear what MIT’s experts in computer science are working on, what CSAIL means to them, and what they think is coming in the next decade of technological advancement.
