Dissecting the umbrella project - CSAIL postdoc gives PopTech talk about "UP"
Remember when hundreds of MIT students ran around a field with LED-outfitted umbrellas? The first performance of "UP: The Umbrella Project" happened at the 2012 PopTech Conference, where CSAIL postdoctoral associate Kyle Gilpin was also part of a talk about the unique programming-infused art piece. (Skip to 8:06 for Kyle's remarks.)
“UP” was a collaboration between CSAIL and the Connecticut-based dance troupe Pilobolus. Researchers at CSAIL's Distributed Robotics Lab will study the video to better comprehend what happens when larger and larger groups try to function via a simple set of commands. The idea is to observe examples of human behavior and see what the implications might be for groups of robots interacting together.
