CSAIL is not only at the forefront of computer science and artificial intelligence research, but is also a leader in providing underserved communities access to digital technology. Through IMARA, an outreach initiative at CSAIL dedicated to finding long-term solutions to making educational technology and resources available to all, CSAIL operates CommuniTech, an effort to bridge the Digital Divide between those with access to technology and those without.
CommuniTech provides refurbished computers through its Used Computer Factory (run by CSAIL System Administrator and Staff Photographer Jason Dorfman) and computer training through its Families Accessing Computer Technology (FACT) program, which is coordinated by MIT senior Ian J. Sugel.
