Making sure the wireless network knows precisely how to provide each user’s device with a good signal is no easy task. Users are constantly on the move, radio waves can get blocked or reflected by multiple obstacles, and, if left unchecked, radio transmitters will consume way too much power, especially in this time of skyrocketing energy prices. Add to this the challenge of ensuring that humans’ exposure to radio waves doesn’t exceed safe levels and you’ve got a world of complexity on your hands.

In this session, we’ll explain how Nokia Bell Labs is using AI and ML to help address these problems to achieve better, more efficient connectivity. We’ll discuss the use of Bayesian Optimization and other techniques for tracking demand and ensuring that wireless energy is directed to where it’s most needed. We’ll also demonstrate that these problems have a mathematical structure that allows for learning methods that are not available for more traditional AI problems such as image classification and language modeling.
