AI and Computer Vision: From Academia to Industry

Abstract:

Based on the research experience at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the industrial development at Sensetime, a leading AI company in China, Professor Tang will discuss the advantage of combining the best of both worlds, academia research and industrial application. He will also talk about how Hong Kong becomes such a unique place for AI research and development. He will discuss the making of SenseTime.

Biography:

Xiaoou Tang (S’93-M’96-SM’02-F’09) received the B.S. degree from the University of Science and Technology of China in 1990, and the M.S. degree from theUniversity of Rochester in 1991. He received the Ph.D. degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1996.

He is a professor of the Department of Information Engineering of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, and the Associate Director of Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology of Chinese Academy of Science. He worked as the group manager of the Visual Computing Group at the Microsoft Research Asia from 2005 to 2008.

Dr. Tang received the Best Paper Award at the IEEE Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR) 2009 and his seminal work on face recognition becomes the first face recognition algorithm that surpassed human performance. The work was awarded Outstanding Student Paper Award at AAAI 2015. He is a program chair of the IEEE International Conference on Computer Vision (ICCV) 2009 and and a general chair of ICCV 2019. He is currently serving as the Editor in Chief of International Journal of Computer Vision (IJCV). He is a Fellow of IEEE. He is the founder of SenseTime.
