When integrating AI tools in healthcare settings, complex interactions between technologies and those using them are not always visible or well-understood. This uncertainty hampers attempts by healthcare organizations to adopt AI/ML, and it also makes it difficult for researchers to identify best practices. In this talk, we will discuss two attempts to better understand the current on-the-ground practices of AI/ML in health systems. First, we will take a "landscape" view, presenting trends identified by interviewing 89 professionals across 11 health systems about their practices for AI procurement, development, integration, and lifecycle management. Next, we take a "deep dive" into the process taken by one health system as it created a sepsis management AI solution. Taken together, these projects help characterize the current state of AI adoption in health systems and generate insight into opportunities to address in the future.
