CSAIL expert weighs in on whether Google's latest gadget is a legitimate quantum computer

Is Google's latest gadget - called "the D-Wave" - a legitimate quantum computer? Wired Magazine recently explored the issue with quantum scientists like CSAIL's Scott Aaronson.

From the article:

Quantum computing is so new and so weird that no one is entirely sure whether the D-Wave is a quantum computer or just a very quirky classical one. Not even the people who build it know exactly how it works and what it can do.

Quantum scientists had long been skeptical of D-Wave...When [the company] held a press conference in 2007 to show off the 16-bit system, MIT quantum scientist Scott Aaronson wrote that the computer was “about as useful for industrial optimization problems as a roast-beef sandwich.”
