AI and machine learning have already had a huge impact on robotics, especially in the areas of sensory perception, mapping and decision-making. I believe that our computational and statistical tools are going to have a similarly grand impact on lower-level robotic control. As we remove our dependence on explicitly-modelled and completely controlled dynamics for our robots, I think that we can expect to see robots executing more agile behaviors, exploiting more efficient mechanical designs, and coping with more uncertain environments.

In this talk, I'll describe the goals and projects of our new Robot Locomotion Group - including bipedal and quadrupedal robots walking on rough terrain and fixed-wing and flapping-winged flight. See you Tuesday.
