Composition Corrector (CC) is a browser-based tool for improving English writing and composition skills for student, academic, and professional documents. CC uses an innovative parsing technology to identify common mistakes in English grammar and to provide examples of correct grammatical patterns. The tool is aimed at a critical and underserved population -- profoundly deaf students who communicate fluently in American Sign Language (ASL). The writing skills of many of these students are reported to be poorer than those of their hearing peers. This situation can follow a student through high school and beyond, and into professional life. CC is meant as an aid in writing correct and clearly focused English as a contribution to professional development. CC is also a tool for any writer whose first language is not standard English.

This talk focuses on data collection, developing an error taxonomy, parsing algorithms and NLP, and detection and correction strategies.
