HCI Meets the Boardroom: User Experience as a Business Unit

This presentation will examine how the HCI profession can increase its strategic influence in the larger business organization by embracing the user experience model. For decades the HCI profession has lamented the lack of influence we exert in the larger business enterprise. In published papers and conference presentations, we have ~Sheard~T the plea from leaders in the profession that we must grow this influence by persuasively communicating the value we currently bring to the larger business organization. While this approach has merit, I will argue in this presentation that this approach alone is grossly inadequate. I will first review the weakness in the traditional ROI argument and then proceed to outline a case for embracing the emerging user experience movement as a means of gaining strategic influence. As we adopt the user experience model, I will highlight the need for HCI professionals to greatly increase their understanding of the goals and workings of the larger business enterprise.
In support of this case, I will briefly describe the HCI program at Bentley, perhaps the only HCI program in the country housed in a business school. In the seven years since its launch, the Bentley program has grown rapidly to become the largest program in the country. According to graduates and employers, the success of the program can be attributed to the alignment of a solid foundation in HCI with a basic understanding of the business organization. Initial reaction to this program has been so positive that we have pushed the concept further by recently launching a combined MBA and MS in Human Factors.
Dr. Gribbons is Director of the graduate program in Human Factors and Information Design at Bentley College, Waltham, Massachusetts. The Information Design Program at Bentley is among the largest and most respected program of this type in the country. Dr. Gribbons is the founder of the Design and Usability Center at the College. In 2002, he was named Distinguished Professor of Human Factors in recognition of his contributions to the college and the profession.
Dr. Gribbons received his Ph.D. from the University of Maryland. He is an Associate Fellow of the Society for Technical Communication (STC) and was a member of the Technical Communication Editorial Board. He is also a member of the Association for Educational Communications and Technology, the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, Usability Professional Association, and the ACM SIGCHI. He is a popular speaker at local and national conferences addressing issues of information design, human factors, and the user experience. His long-term research interests center on the building of a unified theory defining the user experience.
As an expert on the user experience, Dr. Gribbons has been quoted in The Boston Globe, Boston Business Journal, Cox News Service, Mass High Tech, USA Today, the Associated Press, The Washington Post, Investor Daily, East Bay Business Times, ABC 20-20, Business 2.0, a nationally syndicated radio show (A Touch of Grey), US News and World Report, and the Atlanta Journal Constitution.
