Systems trying to help users deal with information overload need to support the use of structured information - like creation dates - while at the same time allowing for irregularity and evolution of the data schemas. We have developed a general-purpose tool for helping users seek information in repositories where objects are linked by arbitrary relationships and have arbitrary properties and values. We show how such a tool can be built without making any domain-specific assumptions about the information being explored.

Additionally, since users rarely know the exact query to ask a system, an understanding of user's search process is used towards automatically generating queries for users, and providing effective suggestions for allowing users to successively improve their queries and ``home in'' on the needed information. These suggestions provide for natural general-purpose navigation and include many generalizations from past work on textual information retrieval.
