PeopleVision: Human Aware Environments

A variety of applications require understanding of human motion and action at a variety of scales. Such applications include character animation, computer and game control input, surveillance, pervasive computing, video indexing and model-based coding. In this talk I will describe "PeopleVision", an "Adventurous Research" project at IBM's T.J.Watson Research Lab, which undertakes the visual tracking of people. In this we are attempting to track people at multiple scales to understand whole body motions and the indpendent motion of limbs, heads and faces. I will describe the main strands of this work (multi-person monocular tracking, 3D active camera control for head tracking, articulated body tracking and head pose estimation) that we are bringing together to form a complete person-tracking infrastructure to service applications that need to be "human aware".
Andrew Senior received his PhD from Cambridge University for his work on `Off-line Cursive Handwriting Recognition' Using Recurrent Neural Networks'. Previously he worked on continuous speech recognition at the French research lab LIMSI. Joining IBM Research in 1994, he continued research into handwriting recognition, before joining the Exploratory Computer Vision Group where he has worked on fingerprint and face recognition, creating IBM's face detection, tracking and recognition system and co-founding IBM's audio-visual speech effort. More recently he has worked on people tracking and articulated body tracking in the PeopleVision project. He is program co-chair for the IEEE 2003 workshop on Analysis and Modelling of Faces and Gestures, co-author of a forthcoming book on biometrics and a sculptor.
