Here, There, and Everywhere: User Interfaces and Spatial Context

The conventional model of the user interface, constrained by a solitary stationary desktop and its peripherals, has long been challenged by work that situates the computer within its surroundings; for example, through collaboration, augmented reality, and mobility. This talk will present some of the design directions being explored by Columbia's Computer Graphics and User Interfaces Lab, to address the relationships between our user interfaces and the spatial context in which they reside. I will discuss view management, for automated dynamic layout of 3D user interfaces that complement what we see around us; eyes-free interaction techniques that avoid the need for visually distracting feedback; and our attempts to accommodate multiple displays, users, and tasks, by embedding them in a fluid and collaborative 3D augmented environment.

Bio:

Steven Feiner (http://www.cs.columbia.edu/~feiner) is a Professor of Computer Science at Columbia University, where he directs the Computer Graphics and User Interfaces Laboratory. He received a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Brown University in 1987. Prof. Feiner's research interests include virtual environments and augmented reality, knowledge-based design of graphics and multimedia, wearable computing, information visualization, and hypermedia. He is coauthor of Computer Graphics: Principles and Practice, and has recently served as general chair for the 2004 ACM Symposium on User Interface Software and Technology and program co-chair for the 2003 IEEE International Symposium on Wearable Computers. In 1991 he received an Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Award.
