Here, There, and Everywhere: User Interfaces and Spatial Context Speaker: Steven Feiner , Columbia University Relevant URL: The conventional model of the user interface, constrained by a solitary stationary desktop and its peripherals, has long been challenged by work that situates the computer within its surroundings; for example, through collaboration, augmented reality, and mobility. This talk will present some of the design directions being explored by Columbia's Computer Graphics and User Interfaces Lab, to address the relationships between our user interfaces and the spatial context in which they reside. I will discuss view management, for automated dynamic layout of 3D user interfaces that complement what we see around us; eyes-free interaction techniques that avoid the need for visually distracting feedback; and our attempts to accommodate multiple displays, users, and tasks, by embedding them in a fluid and collaborative 3D augmented environment.
