Making sense of data becomes more challenging as the data grows larger and becomes more complex. If a picture truly can be worth a thousand words, then clever visualizations of data should hold promise in helping people with sense-making tasks. In this talk, I will illustrate how interactive visualization and visual analytics can help people understand their data better. In particular, I will describe my research into visualization for supporting investigative analysis. This project explores how visual analytics can help investigators explore a large document collection in order to discover embedded stories and narratives scattered across the documents in the collection. My research group has developed a system named Jigsaw that assists investigators in such scenarios by providing interactive visual representations of the documents, the entities within the documents, and connections between them. I'll describe Jigsaw's design, visualizations, application to investigative scenarios, and its potential use in other document-centered sense-making tasks.

Speaker Biography:
John Stasko is a Professor and the Associate Chair of the School of Interactive Computing at the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he is Director of the Information Interfaces Group (http://www.cc.gatech.edu/gvu/ii). His primary research area is human-computer interaction with a specific focus on information visualization and visual analytics. His research group is examining ways to help people benefit from, and take advantage of the large quantities of available information to enrich their lives. He has been author or co-author of over 120 journal articles and conference papers on these topics and others. Stasko is on the editorial board of the journals ACM Transactions on Computer-Human Interaction, Information Visualization, and Journal of Visual Languages and Computing. He was General Chair in 2007 and Papers Co-Chair in 2005 and 2006 for the IEEE Information Visualization (InfoVis) Conference, and he is Papers Co-Chair for the 2009 IEEE Visual Analytics Science and Technology (VAST) Symposium.
