Relevant URL: Digital video and audio recording and transmission is rapidly changing the landscape of consumer electronics and of scientific research. While computer vision has been progressing rapidly, there has been relatively little work on performing computer vision in real time.
Viola and Jones, in their influential paper "Robust real-time object detection" have demonstrated how to use Adaboost to create a reliable face detector that can detect all faces in a video frame at a rate of 15 frames per second and without using any specialized hardware.
I will present the progress my lab has achieved on this problem in the last few years. I will present some new algorithms, new applications, new ways of using specialized hardware, and some of the challenges that we are working on these days.
