The simultaneous electrical stimulation (ES) and fMRI (esfMRI) permits both anterograde and retrograde tracing of connections in the living animal. In addition, however, esfMRI offers a unique opportunity for the visualization of networks underlying electrostimulation-induced behaviors, for the mapping of the neuromodulatory systems, or for the development of electrotherapy and neural prosthetic devices. Yet, the actual local or global neural events during ES are ill understood, and so is the corticocortical propagation of ES-induced signals. In my talk I'll present new data on MR visible tracers and esfMRI, that not only show the capacity of these methods, but also reveal some interesting properties of the cortical microcircuits.
