We give a somewhat personalized history of information theory from 1948 to today. This is followed by speculation on how the theory has affected the growth of information techology. This history is then used to speculate on strategies for choosing theoretical research problems. Pure theoretical beauty, pure practical importance, and weighted combinations of these appear to be non-ideal criteria.
