The Social Life of VisualizationsSpeaker: Martin Wattenberg, IBM Watson Research Center Date: Friday, November 4 2005 Time: 1:30PM to 2:30PM Refreshments: 1:15PM Location: Patil Seminar Room (32-G449) Host: Jaime Teevan, CSAIL Contact: Jaime Teevan, 617/253-1611, teevan@csail.mit.edu Relevant URL: Visualization is often viewed as an efficient way of getting information out of a database and into an individual's head. I argue that the value of many visualizations derives instead from their position in social systems involving two or more people. Through a series of examples from both science and art, I will discuss how this viewpoint leads to new directions, questions and design principles.
